Veteran's Day

November 11 marks a day for remembering troops and those who have died fighting for this country. Many lives have been take all in the name of freedom. It honors those who have served in the United States armed forces beginning back in 1918.

Arlington National Cemetery is a the focal point of reverence for America's veterans. Many may wonder why the date November 11th was chosen for remembering troops. This was the day World War I was won at the time of 11 a.m. (11th day, 11th month, 11th hour.)

From the site Kids for our troops it says that:

"The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes "Present Arms" at the tomb. The nation's tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays "taps." The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater.

Every year the President of the United States urges all Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate public ceremonies."

While writing this post I started thinking how is Veteran's Day different than Memorial Day? According to the site Apples4theteacher

"Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in the service of our nation.

Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but it's difficult to prove the origins of the day. There is also evidence that a women's group in the South decorated graves before the end of the Civil War. In either case, Memorial Day has had numerous starts due to the human need to honor the dead. Though some people think it's a day to honor any and all dead, Memorial Day is intended to honor those who have given their all in service to our country."

So one has deals with those who have served in the U.S Armed Services (Veterans Day) and the other deals with those who gave their life for their country (Memorial Day).
